3 Days in Alsace-suggestions?

We will be spending 3 days in Colmar this December, primarily visiting the Christmas markets. We arrive around noon on Thursday and will spend the rest of the day exploring the town. On Friday, we will be taking the train to Strasbourg for the day.

We're looking for suggestions for the third day. We don't have a car, so it will be local transportation. One idea we had was to visit Basel but were thinking about doing that on our way to Zurich. So, that leaves us with Saturday. We're open to any suggestions.

Thanks

John

The RS guide to France recommends taking a day out of Colmar for the Route du Vin. It says you'll either need to rent a car or take a minibus tour such as Les Circuits d'Alsace or Regioscope; it also says there is bus service to some of the wine-making villages but not on Sundays. If you just choose one or two villages, Eguisheim and Kaysersberg are mentioned.

Or, if you are nature fans, you might do a day's walking in the Natural Regional Parc de Vosges just west of Colmar.

Google "Noel in Alsace" - all the villages around Colmar do it up big. It's magical. There is bus service.

Last September I biked the wine route, visited Strasbourg, Colmar, and Mulhouse. I LOVED Strasbourg and ended up spending another day on the island. That would be my recommendation...but then my personal preference is to slow down whenever possible. (I did too much on that trip.). I believe Strasbourg has the largest Christmas market, no?

If that doesn't appeal to you consider taking a local train to one of the villages/towns on the wine route.

Strasbourg has the biggest markets, but bigger isn't better. Colmar was magical, wish I'd had time to see the villages.
