24 hours in NE France

Hi! We have one night free in our itinerary and are looking to make a stop in the French countryside on our way from Paris to Switzerland next June. It looks like between the 2 train routes we could make a stop in Dijon, Mulhouse, Strasbourg, Colmar, or Saint-Louis. We are looking to see more of the small town life after being in Paris for 4 nights. We will have an 11 and 16 year old with us and enjoy food, wine, outdoors. Is there any of these cities that you love? Or ones that we should cross off? Thanks in advance.

Colmar. Especially for your 11 year old (and maybe the 16 year old too!), re-watch "Beauty and Beast" before you go, and it will seem like you've been transported to Belle's village. It actually was based on the towns of Alsace, with Colmar being one of the prettiest. Be sure to spend some time in the Marché Couvert if you love food, wine, beer, etc. But mostly it about walking around the town which is quaint and beautiful. My only caveat is that Colmar is hardly a "hidden gem." In June, it might be quite crowded...

I would choose the historic and charming city of Strasbourg. There have canal boat rides your kids would enjoy. Make sure to have an Alsatian Tarte, similar to a pizza but made with bacon and onion. Beautiful city!

I dont know Burgundy well but I've been all over Alsace and there are hundreds of charming towns. I would try Obernai Riquewihr, Barr and smaller towns rather than Colmar...Strasbourg is interesting if you like cities but I found Colmar too touristy. Metz is actually very beautiful and fun city.

For just a few hours, Colmar is perfect. Strasbourg deserves more time, and Dijon is less interesting to me.
Mulhouse is a great option if you are into cars or trains - there are world-class museums for both there!
