I have a train from Barcelona and then a connection to Avignon with about 2 hours in Nimes. Doesn't seem to be a left luggage stand in the train station in Nimes. Do I just hang around the train station, or try to see Nimes for an hour or so? Thanks for your help.
Go to the Coliseum, you might have time.
Mike
Yes, the Coliseum is just a short 10 min walk from train station.
Well, the walk from the train station isn't that bad, but shlepping bags makes it seem a lot longer, and then you would have to drag them through the Amphitheater. That's a non-starter. To be honest, 2 hours in Nimes is really a short time unless you are doing a kamikaze style visit. Ask when you get to the station if they will hold your luggage and if there IS a place, you could do a quick visit.
I don't remember it being too cobble stoney so if you have a bag with wheels you can take a little hike just to see the Roman collisieum everyone mentioned.
I'm planning a trip there in September. The Arena is the closest to the train station, I'd say less than 1/3 kilometer, Maison Caree is about the same distance again in the same line - so about 2/3 kilometer (4/10 of a mile) each way to see both. There is a TI at the arena and another just down the street a half block facing out from the front of Maison Caree (not sure if there's one at the train station?).
Depending on how you're doing on time, you can go another 1/3 kilometer (maybe 1000 ft.) to the gardens that are a good visit on their own and have a couple smaller Roman ruins (Temple Diana closer and the Magne Tower at the end of the park, possibly another 1/3 km).
Another option is to take a taxi from the train station all the way up to the Magne Tower and work your way back, through the park, past the Temple Diana, past the Maison Caree then to the Arena and back to the train station. There will be a taxi stand at the train station. There might be taxis handy at the arena to get you back to the station. If so, you're probably looking at about one km total walking. I'd want either a local map, something printed off Google maps, or a smart phone - just to keep myself going in the right direction.
Alternatively, if the walk doesn't appeal to you, there is a fine arts museum about half the distance of the Arena. You can easily get a taxi there. I'd bet they have a place to put your bags while you visit. It may be worth having them call a taxi to get back to the station, just so you don't get lost - or be sure to have a map, it's just in a neighborhood and the direction might not be obvious.
If a bag check isn't available at the train station and decide to visit the Arena/Amphitheater and can get your luggage there, they my be able/willing to stash it near the entrance for you while you tour the site. The audioguide includes lots of stops along an up-and-down-and-around circuit, but you can cut it short if time won't allow. It's pretty spectacular. The roman temple in the Les Jardins de la Fontaine park is also worth a visit, but it's another half-mile beyond the arena from the station. Are you up for taking a taxi or two?
