Our hotel is located in the 17th arrondissement. Is this a safe area? What should we expect! This will be our first trip.

We spend every fall deep in the 17th - Batignolles ares. Will be here this October. Where is your hotel? All of Paris is safe. This is a very safe gentrified district with absolutely nothing of tourist interest which is why we love it. Good cafes and also Italian style coffee shops. Descent restaurants and the market street Rue Levis. It is not very central for a first trip so you need to figure out how to use the metro and I hope your hotel is near a metro stop. The apartment we rent is inconveniently located near 3 metros -- so a bit of a walk to each but then it is good to have several choices of route. The line 14 of the metro will take you from Orly to the edge of the 17th. From CDG just get a cab for 56 Euro for 4 people for door to door service.

It is a pretty wide area. What hotel are you staying at specifically?
It will also effect your "best way" to Versailles mentioned in your other post.
