Our family of 4 is planning a first-time trip for 2 weeks in June-July. We fly in to Nice and hoping to see French Riviera coast, go up to Genoa for 2 days or surroundings, then come back to Barcelona for 2 days. While in France, would like to visit area near Nice and lavender fields and villages. Would also like to stay at an authentic house/apt in a small charming village near french market and beautiful view rather than rental condos or hotels. But so this place is within driving distance to attractions for day trips. Could you recommend? Also, do you think this itinerary is doable or too much? What is the best place to stay and must see in Italy near by?
Thank you!!
I would suggest heading to the Valensole plateau area first to try to see lavender. I would recommend staying in the cute village of Cotignac for at least 3 days to explore the area.
Then to Nice - and drop the car. The area is easy to explore by public transportation. From NIce you can take a train to Genoa. If you want a car you can rent one there. Then just take a cheap flight to Barcelona.
This way you will not only save a lot of driving time, you will also avoid the huge fee for renting a car in one country and dropping in another.
The more popular tourist destinations are smaller towns south of Genoa, versus the city itself. For instance S. Margherita Ligure + boat excursion to Portofino or around the five towns of the Cinque Terre. Pisa airport also has budget flights to Barcelona.
For flights, see www.skyscanner.com. How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it. Regional Italian train schedules are currently published through June 11, but won't change much after that.
For estimated driving times, you can look at http://www.viamichelin.com/. Key word, of course, is "estimated."
I agree with Tripatty - your plan has a LOT of driving, and hers will minimize that.
