14 Day Road Trip - Itinerary Suggestions Requested

Hi all, We will have 14 days in France in October, beginning the 10th. The first 3 nights will be in Paris, and then we head out via rental car, returning to Paris on the 24th. We have the car all set as well as 5 nights in Azay-le- Rideau (10/13 - 10/18) which we will use as a base for exploring the Loire Valley. When we leave the Loire Valley, the plan kind of falls apart.

The places we definitely want to visit before returning to Paris: Mont St Michel and Normandy beaches (of course) and Giverny. We would really like 2 days in the Champagne region before returning to Paris. It looks like a loop beginning and ending in Paris is (technically) 1200-ish kilometers. Have we bitten off more than we can comfortably chew? We don't want to be chasing our tails for the last 6 days of the trip. Please advise about what, if anything, we should jettison. My head says to postpone Champagne until the next trip. My heart says "but maybe there won't be a next trip." Also, given the rough idea of where we will be, your best suggestions, particularly about out of the way/lesser known places would be most welcomed.

We have been to Paris so many times but can never get enough, and there is an insane wine festival in Montmartre while we're there plus a restaurant I really want to take my husband to plus we deserve another glass of champagne on a Seine boat ride.

Sincere thanks, in advance.

Yes, postpone Champagne. Looking at your itinerary, you could take the train to Tours, pick up a car, visit Loire, Normandy and return the car in Vernon or Rouen. You might consider taking a train to Loire/Tours, when you arrive France and putting Paris at the end of your trip.

If you find yourself with plenty of time in Paris, you could take a day trip via train to Reims in Champagne.

Where are you picking up and returning your car rental? I think it’s possible, maybe look at reducing one night in the Loire and add to Normandy or Mont St. Michel. There are some small hotels to stay at near Mont St Michel, where there is parking and its easy to walk to Mont St Michel- we arrived late in the day stayed overnight and explored when it wasn't as busy in the evening and first thing the next day before heading to Normandy. Do go to Champagne but consider leaving out Giverny, the gardens close at the end of October. I have been 4x but never that late in the fall. Driving in the all the areas you have listed is not difficult. We were able to squeeze 4n into a trip in May to Paris and it never disappoints.

It sounds like you are committed to the wine festival but if you change your mind/plans, your itinerary might work a bit better with some changes.

We went to Giverny towards the end of September and it was lovely. If you would like to do it, consider doing your itinerary in reverse. Train to Vernon/Giverny, pick up car (or take train to Rouen and pick up car there) See Normandy, head to Loire, return the car at Tours and take the train back to Paris.

I agree that 5 nights in Loire relative to your time in Normandy and Paris may be a day long.

I like the above tips for Mont St. Michel. We stayed at an inn just off the island, about 4 miles or so to MSM parking and took a shuttle to the island. We visited the island both late in the day and the following morning we arrived at about 8 or 8:30 to arrive at abbey doors at opening. Thus we missed the crowds. We have gorgeous photos at the golden hour of farm fields with sheep and MSM in the background.

You have 8 days in Paris and the Loire Valley. Apparently you want to spend a final day or two again in Paris? Drop either Normandie or Champagne. Whatever remains makes the trip perhaps more relaxed.

Not a big fan of multiple stop trips and while Paris is irresistible leaving out the rest of France isn’t my thing. Good Luck with however your trip turns out.
