Should I make a reservation for the train to travel from Paris to nice in September? I purchased a 4 day pass to travel through France and Italy....

Yes, as you won't be able to travel on the TGV without a reservation. Note that reservations for Pass holders are limited, so once the quota for a particular train is sold out you wouldn't be able to travel (even if they still had empty seats). In that case, your choices would be to either buy a regular ticket and not use the Pass, or buy a reservation on a different train. Note that reservations are specific to train, date and departure time so you can ONLY board the one train shown on the reservation.
The bottom line - it would be a really good idea to get the reservations locked-in as early as possible.

Yes, if you have a rail pass, you should make the TGV reservation now at http://ricksteves.raileurope.com/us/rail/point_to_point/triprequest.htm. These can get sold out weeks in advance.
