Paris to Toulouse

We will be in Paris in August and then will be traveling to Toulouse for a friend's wedding (my husband and my two teenage daughters). We have three days (two nights) between our Paris stay and the wedding and were thinking about renting a car and driving down to Toulouse. We would be interested in visiting some of the chateaus in the Loire valley and some small villages along the way to Toulouse.

With the realization that our time is limited and we can't possibly see everything, are there not to miss small historical villages along the way that we should work into the itinerary? Any small friendly b&bs along the way that you might recommend?

If you are nimble and disciplined, you can see a good deal with 2 1-night stands.

Rent a car in Paris and spend a day visiting perhaps 2 chateaux (Chambord and Chenonceau will keep you busy). Spend the night in Tours or Amboise or further south, and then get up early and drive to one of the smaller towns along the Dordogne river. Beynac is popular here, but for good reason.

Hint: The further you can get on Day 1, the more time you will have in the Dordogne on Day 2. And you will absolutely wish you had more time there.

An alternative plan would be to spend part of a day of your Paris visit visiting one of the great Renaisance chateaux (Versailles, Fontaineblu, Chantilly) for your "chateau" experience and just skedadle down to the Dordogne the first day and spend 2 nights there. It's a long drive but feasible, alternatively you can take the TGV partway and rent a car in Angouleme, or just take a regular train all the way.
