Is the 12th arrondissement, near Gare de Lyon, a reasonable location to get around Paris? Is there anything to do at night in the area? It seems slow but up and coming. I'm not getting a good understanding of the area from my Google searches because it is such a large district.
As you say, it's a big area, and I doubt if all parts of it are where you'd want to be - big cities can change from block to block.
Where are you looking?
I would say it is a great location for getting around Paris because you have the 1 line right there -- or you can walk or take the bus right over the bridge to the Left Bank.
There is the classic brasserie L'européen, right there at Gare de Lyon, and another excellent restaurant, L'Ebauchoir, also a metro stop or short walk away. Or go one stop to Reuilly-Diderot and change to the 8, or two stops to Bastille, where you can get either the 8 or the 5 back across the river.
I don't know if the neighborhood itself is so interesting, but with the 1 line (and all the buses), you are quickly into the heart of Paris, or up in the cool coffee shops etc of the 11th.
(Full disclosure: I live in the 12th arrondissement, but not around the Gare de Lyon area).
Thank you for the replies. I would be staying close to Bassin de l'Arsenal. I'm trying to decide if I should stay in the 11th or 12th district. The 11th seems more lively but also more congested.
At the Bassin de l’Arsenal, you’re practically in the 11th (and the 4th), so I”m not sure it makes much difference. This is even more central even though just a little shifted over from the station - Bastille metro station like I said connects to the 8 and the 5 in addition to the 1, so it’s great for getting around to see the traditional sights.
Kim, thanks! You've helped make my decision. Sounds like an ideal location.
