1 day in Paris. Few questions

Hi,

We will be doing a quick trip (1 day/2 nights) of Paris and need some help. We will leave Lauterbrunnen around 3 PM, so will reach Paris in dark/night. We have a rough plan like this -

Day-1: Reach Paris in night.

Day-2: Notre Dame -> Louvre -> Tuilerie Garden -> Place Vendome -> Opera Garnier -> Eiffel Tower

Day-3: Fly out from CDG at 10:30 AM.

I have few doubts -

  • I thought of staying near CDG Airport because we will have to be at Airport at 7:30. Should it be ok or somewhere in between ? We are on budget side, like $100/per night.

  • Should I add/remove/edit places or sequence on Day-2 ? We are not much into museums, but love beautiful architectures.

  • Is it worth to see Versailles in first half and see other places in second half till night ?

Regards

Something like this on your own for the main sights of Paris in one day would be easy ...
0900 Eiffel Tower (start here - book an early ascent)
1100 Notre Dame
1300 Lunch
1400 Arc de Triomphe & Champs Elysees
1445 Metro to Place de la Concorde
1500 Walk Place de la Concorde - Madeleine - Opera - Place Vendome -Tuileries
1600 The Louvre (closes 1800 most days)

Stay close to Gare du Nord or RER Blue Line for CDG early morning departure.
Forget Versailles, it's a full day to do it justice, and requires travelling.

djp_syd - Thanks for ideas. But I kept Eiffel Tower for last place to visit, as this can be visited during dark as well, if we want to see light of City from top. Since we have limited time, we would like to spend time till maximum time before retiring to hotel.

Secondly, We can stay near Gare du Nord. Train from Paris will drop us to Gare De Lyon. Should we take taxi from Gare De Lyon to hotel near Gare Du Nord ? I will try to get budget hotel near station, which will be convenient to go to Airport next day. I read that bus #65 bus can take us, but we will have luggage (3 bags).

You can take the RER D between Gare de Lyon & Gare du Nord, and you can take RER -B (3) to the airport.

To maximize your time, get reservations on-line for the Eiffel Tower, so you can go up without waiting in a line. BUT, you need to get them months in advance - not sure when you're going.

You could even stay near Chatelet Les Halles which would be more convenient for evening restaurants & walking. The RER to CDG is only 30-40 mins so as long as you leave by 7am ish.
What are your dates?

My travel will be on 13/14-October, have enough time before ticket booking will open for Eiffel Tower.
I am searching hotels near Chatelet Les Halles and other areas as well. Hardly I am getting hotels rooms below $200 for 2 nights. On Google, it shows me in less than $200, but when I put my dates (13th in and 15th out), rate increases.

As per my suggested plan, I will be travelling :-

13-October : Gare De Lyon to Gare du Nord

14-October : Gare du Nord to places mentioned by djp_syd and back to hotel Gare du Nord in evening

15-October : Gare du Nord to CDG Airport

Should we go with any train pass or point to point tickets ? We are two adults.

For moving around Paris itself consider getting a Carnet of ten metro tickets. The metro is a great time saver when going from place to place. Don't believe you can use those tickets out to the airport area, but I might be wrong. If you like architecture, you might want to consider going to the Orsay Museum. The beauty of the converted train station makes it worth a visit even if you are not into art. Google it and see what you think.

I searched more about places, you mentioned and rates and can see these options which are below/around $200 for both nights :-

Grand Hotel (72 Boulevard de Strasbourg. 75010 Paris)

Hotel Paris Louis Blanc (232 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Martin, 75010 Paris)

Caulaincourt Square Hotel (2 Square Caulaincourt, 75018 Paris)

As per my schedule, can you suggest, which will be more feasible ? Just to recap, we will be coming late night from Gare De Lyon (From Switzerland) on first day and will leave early morning from Gare Du Nord (to CDG Airport) on last day.

When I was in Paris this past May, Place Vendome was being renovated, including the column, which is inside a giant box. So, I wouldn't go out of my way to go there.

The Louvre is so large and there is so much to see, I would almost skip it if you only have one day and don't love museums. We went to the Orsay on our last trip, and really enjoyed it--great collection of art, smaller size, and it's in an old train station--beautiful! You could spend 2 hours here, see a good assortment of art edited to what you most enjoy, and move on to your next stop.

You're in luck if you want to spend more time in the Louvre, it's open till 21:45 on Wednesdays.

Is it there any event or festival during 13-15 October ? I was checking Hotel Paris Louis Blanc (and other hotels too), prices are less now, but higher during my travel dates. I thought, advance booking in hotel should benefit me.

This one is 100 meters out the door of Gare du Nord, a chain, but clean and reliable. I gave up looking for charming inns at a cheap price a long time ago and prefer reliability if time is short. The Ibis starts serving breakfast about 5 a.m., so you can get a good start the second morning. In fact, there's a row of hotels directly across the street from Gare du Nord, but a few look a little cheesy, so it's hard to recommend without having stayed there.

Several of ones suggested weren't too close though they were three-stars at a good price. One was a hostel but pretty far from the station.

Bets, I check ibis hotel mentioned by you and it is $272 for 2 nights. Hotel Paris Louis Blanc is just 200m away from ibis and for two nights they are charging $180 (just trying to compare)

Sounds like a winner. Yes, that's high for an Ibis.

Interested in just doing some walking around? Give some thought to Paris Walks, which do 2 hour walks in a neighborhood. You could do one in the Marais or Ile. St louis and get some history and a sense of the city itself. The Louvre is so large, why not save it for a trip when you have more time.
