Two of Rick Steves recommended hotels live up to their billing: Hotel Elysee in Lyon and Hotel des Alpes in Annecy. Both are small, family run, and the people are so nice. Truly make you feel welcome, and they were so helpful. Not luxurious but spotless and a great price. Great locations. Some stair climbing but doable (I walk with a cane). Highly recommend.
