Restaurant La Couronne in Rouen

My family and I dined at the famous La Couronne restaurant last evening in Rouen, France. We were so looking forward to eating at this historic place that inspired Julia Child, especially after reading the recommendation in Rick Steve’s France book, reviews on Google, and hearing raves of others on the river cruise we are on. Unfortunately it did not come close to living up to this reputation.
We were seated upstairs surrounded by framed photos of past famous patrons looking more like a Hard Rock Cafe. When we asked about the lower level seating which appeared more cozy and historic, we were told that is a private area.
The wine list was a large book with most of the wines crossed out, with a choice of only one dry white wine by the glass. When asked for assistance to pair wines with each course, we were told that one white would do for all four courses and the waiter walked away. The wine was poured without an offer to taste it first. When I asked him to stop so I could, his eyes became wide and he said he was surprised I would want to do that. He was fluent in English. Every restaurant we have eaten at here no matter the price point, the taste was always offered.
All four of us ordered from different parts of the menu, prefix menus and a la carte. The amuse bouche was sour and inedible. The oysters were not fresh but were okay, the foie gras was good, the shrimp/lobster starter had no lobster in it only the shell for visual. For main courses, the scallops were done well, but all three others fish dishes were either over-salted, overcooked, or not fresh.
Disappointed too many times thus far, we decided to leave before the cheese course. They took nothing off the bill of 350 Euros, even after a long discussion.
Arriving back to my room, I finished the night with a granola bar to ease my hunger. After a week in France eating at places of the full range of prices, this is not the food standard or service standard in France at all. Julia Child would be appalled.

I'm curious to know what time of day you were there, and how many others from your cruise were also dining there?

I had dinner at this restaurant in May, 2023. I mostly agree with your assessment. The restaurant isn't keeping up their service and food quality to match the restaurant's long-lived reputation. I still enjoyed the evening more as an experience than a great meal. The meal was fine, it just wasn't terrific.
I think that if you had done your due diligence by looking at more recent reviews online, you would have been more prepared for what to expect.
I enjoyed the photos on the wall, that is one of the main reasons that I went there!
