Hello I'm looking for a place to stay, in mid September for 3 nights--party of one. I'm a bit baffled as I'm looking thru the RS France 19th edition and cannot for the life of me find anything at all on the city of Marseille by itself or under Provence. What am I missing?
Stay in or by the port area? Price, modest (1-3 stars) would preferred. However not looking for an American style.

Indeed, Marseille is not covered in the France book (I think it is briefly covered in the Provence book).
Your intuition is correct, staying by the Vieux port area is best. Hotel Escale Oceania is pretty good in the 3-star category, I had family staying there once to visit (I used to live in Marseille). Hotel Hermes is also supposed to be good, and cheaper.

Amazing place
Enjoyed my stay at Hôtel Carré Vieux Port. 1 street from the old port, convenient, clean, quiet, helpful staff, reasonable prices, good breakfast.
