Hello! Canadian single mom of a 19-year old, looking for a place to stay in Paris for 8 nights in January. My only "must haves" are a private bathroom, and a relatively easy access to public transportation. I'm not sure Paris hotels are in my financial range, I might need to explore AriBnB, but if anyone has some recommendations that are around 120 Euros a night, I would appreciate it very much! I'm not at all an experienced traveler but I LOVE Rick Steves! I'm open to any other advice regarding Paris, and if course I bought RS's Paris Guide :-)
You might start by looking on booking.com. It allows you to filter for your price point and amenity requirements as well as location. Many recommendation staying in one of the arrondissements that border on the Seine; particularly the 4th (Marais), 5th (Latin Quarter), and 6th (St-Germain-des-Prés). Because the usual tourist sites are so spread out, it is just as important to have a place within a short walk to the nearest Metro and bus stop. Your budget is low, even for Paris in January, but you should be able to find hotels with a high 7s/low 8s review on booking.com. with 2-3☆ ratings. I feel you can trust Booking's reviews, since only those who have stayed at a place can leave a review. Book on the hotel's own website.
A stay of 8 nights often leads people to going the Airbnb route, but Paris has its own problems with short term rentals, and, IMO, visitors who are inexperienced with European travel can benefit a lot by having a front desk where they can get last minute information or help.
I stayed at the Hotel du Levant when I was in Paris last May.
Fabulous Location. The Cluny is right up the street. Notre Dame around the corner.
I walked everywhere except for the HoHo bus but public transportation is all over the place. There are trams and streetcars and buses and Metro Stations.
Staff is so nice and hotel is so sweet. Old. Been in the same family for generations. Price is good.
I would check out the Astotel hotel chain. They have a range of 3 and 4 star hotels across Paris, the 3 stars would be within your budget. They have private bathrooms, breakfast usually included and free all day snacks (tea, coffee, cake etc). I would book direct with the hotel.
The Hotel du Printemps in the 12th arrondissement might work for you. It’s not central central, but it is right by metro line 6, and just a few minutes more from Nation, which has the line 1 for a rapid trip into central Paris, the line 6 that goes across the south of Paris, the line 2 that goes up around the top, the line 9 that goes up to Republique and over to central Paris and out to Trocadéro, and the RER A.
The neighborhood around the Hotel du Printemps is nice, with a really great market street right around the corner.
The rooms are small but clean. I have stayed there myself (I live nearby) and put family members and friends there over the years. I think it is good value for money.
Clairity needed. Will your 19 year old be traveling with you or is this a solo excursion?
Paris isn’t cheap and in all honesty you need to consider budgeting more for an accommodation.
Over decades of travel to Paris I’ve enjoyed the Hotel Muguet in the 7th. Was cheap in 1972 . Isn’t cheap now.
Hopefully other Forum members who have taken solo trips to Paris is recent years will share intel.
Make sure that you tell the hotel when you book that there will be two of you even if you plan on sharing a room. Some very cheap rooms only have a single bed. You should be able to get a twin room with two separate single beds.
