For accommodation, for things to do, or for both?

For accommodation, a few years ago I stayed at the Mercure Centre Cathédrale and found it very good on all counts, especially the location. Recent reviews seem to agree.

For things to do, I'd just say that wandering in the center of Metz is a delight! Along the way, the cathedral, the Cour d'Or museum, and the FRAC contemporary art center are very interesting IMO. Centre Pompidou Metz is also worthwhile if the current exhibition interests you; it is a hair further away.

It has been years since I last stayed in Metz. That was in 2007, ie, it is time to go back..

My hotel has always been one of the numerous hotels in the train station area, many of which have been remodeled, refurbished , changed ownership, etc. I would recommend the "Ibis Styles Metz Centre Gare"

In your 2 night stay , I would assume you have 1.5 days in Metz. Spending all that time in Metz is also doable, culturally and historically.

In case doing a day trip elsewhere in this part of Lorraine is your aim, I would suggest Thionville or Nancy , both of a short distance, both well worth your time especially from a historical perspective.
