Can anyone recommend a nice hotel (small, good) in the Verdun area and another in and around Bastogne, Belgium? Thanks.
Try the Best Western Melba in Bastogne. Good location and very friendly hotel. I can't help you with Verdun; we weren't happy with the place we stayed (it was a bit out of town).
You might try logishotels.com as a resource for both locations. These are small hotels, usually with a resident chef/owner.
They are often in small towns or the countryside and a car is needed to get to them. But if you are going to Verdun, you will probably have a car.
Verdun is really not all that great for "small, nice, good". Have stayed in chain hotels and a rather ragged inner city hotel in Verdun three different times. Take a chain hotel and get on with what I would assume is battlefield touring. The Melba is a pretty standard place in Bastogne and centrally located. Not a lot "small, nice, good" places here either but nothing terrible. Bastogne is very crowded in early December (this year 11-13 December) for the annual commemoration of the Battle of the Bulge and you can't find a hotel within 20 miles sometimes for this period.
