Looking for a good place to stay in Arles

Hi all,

My husband and I plan to spend about 10 days this September (2024) in Provence. We would like to have one home base, and take day trips from there. We are very interested in Roman ruins, Van Gough, attending a few (if possible) market days, and absorbing the culture of Provence.

We are thinking that Arles might be a good place to base in. We are looking for a place to stay in Arles. We are looking for: private bathroom with shower, quiet place, breakfast being provided, friendly hosts, no spas, not fancy, just clean.

I would really appreciate any and all advice you might be able to provide about staying in Arles.

Thanks very much!

Le Calendal is very well located, between the Roman theater and amphitheater, easy walking to most of the sights in central Arles (but not the Roman museum on the western edge of the city). It has a nice cafe in front and garden in back, and there are various kinds of restaurants and cafes within a block or two. Breakfast is offered, I believe for an additional charge, and ours were good. I stayed there with a Road Scholar tour last year, and I think Rick Steves tours use it too. There is a spa, but my friend who used it said it wasn't very good. There's no elevator.

You may want a car for some of your day trips, so parking may be an issue. I'm sure the hotel has some kind of arrangement, but I didn't see a reference on its website and we didn't use parking. Arles is a great base for many parts of Provence, especially with wheels.

We stayed at Le Calendel a few years back and strongly recommend staying there. Our room looked directly out on the Coliseum. We had a car, and they gave us instructions for parking at a lot that was a walk of a few blocks. And we found the spa to be fantastic fun. We loved our time there.

A gent we met there recommended a day visiting Chateau de Baux. We loved it. Tapestries we purchased there hang in our dining room and remind us of that trip daily. Fun!

Some time ago we enjoyed our stay at the Hotel de l’Amphitheâtre. It was well located. Our room was very large and comfortable. We chose coffee only option so cannot speak to breakfast but it was offered. We had a rental car and conveniently parked in a municipal garage a few minutes walk away. I believe we had a discounted rate. The staff were helpful. We stayed four or five nights and were happy with our choice.

My friend and I enjoyed our stay at the Hôtel La Muette in the city center. Excellent breakfast with local products, charming hotel, convenient to walk @round the city, reasonably priced. Unfortunately, their website is only in French. (Great translation using Google.) Pretty highly rated overall.

I've also stayed at Le Calendal on a Road Scholar tour and yes, the Rick Steves tours stay there as well. I loved this location....you can have a drink or snack out on their front terrasse and overlook Roman Ruins! Very cool. My room was in the annex building and very nice. As mentioned no elevator and one of the women from my tour program on my floor had to go up a few more steps and down a few steps to get to her room after having gone up a flight from the ground floor. I travel light and can easily manage my carry on size bag under these conditions but it doesn't work for others.

It was also easy to walk from this location down to the river and the area where Van Gogh painted Starry Night over the Rhone.

Almost forgot. Le Muette also has street parking (free if available) or parking garage. Luckily in 3 days, I never had to use the garage.

I second the recommendation for Hotel La Muette. 3 of us stayed in a family room for 3 nights last September. It was very comfortable and conveniently located. If driving, I believe you will need to contact the hotel in advance so that they can let down the barriers for your car, though there may be a way to approach the hotel that doesn’t require that.

Hi Philip and ecs2014,

Thanks a lot for your additional comments about Hotel La Muette. We will have a rental car for part of our stay there. Your information about some free street parking as well as contacting the hotel in advance so that they can let down the barriers for your car is invaluable!

Really appreciate it!
