Lodging near Gare de Lyon, Paris

Lodging near Gare de Lyon, Paris

We are planning a trip to Paris in April but haven’t been there for a long time. We would like to find a nice hotel or bed/breakfast within easy walking distance of Gare de Lyon, hopefully including breakfast, and not TOO expensive. We would welcome any suggestions or recommendations, especially from recent travelers. Thanks in advance for any comments.

Don't know its current price, but we have stayed in the Marriott Courtyard that is literally across the street from Gare de Lyon. Lots of cafes and boulangeries nearby.

I’ve stayed in several hotels in the area. Breakfast is not included and recently I’ve been going to the brasserie l’Européen for breakfast and people watching.
Holiday Inn Gare de Lyon Bastille,4-star remodelled rooms with shower are the best. Overpriced breakfast. Will hold your luggage for free, lots of lounges to wait for your train or taxi pickup. Very close to station.
Locomo quirky 3- star but clean, comfortable, local favorite. Overpriced breakfast. Very close to station. Will hold luggage.
Ibis Ledru-Rollin has a giant garden in the back, so ask for a garden-side room. Breakfast here is reasonable for the price. Chain hotel, standard French hotel breakfast buffet but all the coffee and croissants you want. Luggage lockers in the basement. Spartan.
Marceau Bastille 4 star half-way between Gare de Lyon and Bastille. Comfy rooms. Only bathtubs with shower. Good breakfast.
Hotel Palym - 3 star a bit retro quirky
Citadines apparthotel- clean, efficient with kitchen, 3 star no air conditioning

A related question: when I look up hotels online, there seem to be many websites listed (hotel.com, booking.com, etc) so that I sometmes found it difficult to actually find the hotel website. It would seem to me that the hotel website would be the best one to use, but it's puzzling to me that it is sometimes difficult to find. How important is it to use the actual hotel website instead of the variety of other website booking possibilities?

"How important is it to use the actual hotel website instead of the variety of other website booking possibilities"

You'll get a variety of options on this. I'm on Team - Book with the official hotel website. Others like Booking.com because they can keep all their reservations in one location.

I book with the hotel because I prefer not to have a middle person between them and my reservation. SOMEtimes if you book direct you can get free breakfast or a small percentage off. ALSO look to see if the hotel has a FB page where you might see a deal on the price.

Whatever you do, DON'T be in a hurry when you are making reservations. It's easy to google a hotel name but sometimes you are put onto a travel agent site where you will get extra charges. IF you book someplace like Elizabeth's Holiday Inn location then you can go thru the official Holiday Inn website which is actually IHG. IF you google, be sure to put in Official "X" Hotel website.

I recently was careless when looking something up on a hotel website I've accessed before on my computer and just went to the first website that came up. As soon as I got there I knew it was wrong because it did not have the "right" picture that the hotel uses for its website. If you were unfamiliar with the hotel's website you'd never know although the url was not correct when I looked at it.

Thanks for your help ! We have made a reservation at the Hotel Viator Paris-Gare de Lyon. I THINK I used the hotel website but it was difficult to tell for sure. We ended up paying 342 euros ($398-non-refundable) for two nights with breakfast across the street from Gare de Lyon. It's more than we wanted to pay, but I think we are late in making reservations, so have to take what we can get.

I do wonder if there are decent cheaper bed/breakfast or even rooming houses, but I don't know how to find them. So thanks again for all your help. Any further advice appreciated !!

About ten years ago we stayed several nights at the Hotel Corail, on Rue de Lyon a few blocks north of the station. It wasn't too expensive, comfortable enough, with breakfast included as I recall. I can't find it now on Google Maps, so my guess is that it's changed name and ownership, probably also refurbished. But Google Maps is a good way to look for hotels by location, so is booking.com. Google Earth street view lets you eyeball the surroundings.

Pam is always right, in my experience, including recommending that you book directly with the hotel rather than through a site like booking.com. If anything goes wrong, you're better off having booked directly. Also, the hotel gets your full payment rather than having to share it with a third-party site. I used booking.com for searching, but always book directly when possible.

You did well with the Viator. It’s actually about a block away when you go up rue de Lyon. We had friends stay there a few months ago, but I didn’t ask about it.

We go to Paris a lot for different events and are even going this weekend. The Holiday Inn jumped 150€ per night from when I stayed there one night in February, so we’re going to the Ibis. I booked the refundable rate at the same you did for the Viator.. The Locomo increased a lot too from when I stayed there in a single there in October and my husband in December.

When you leave the Gare de Lyon, walk up the right side of rue de Lyon where the Brasserie l’Europeen is. Go past the bakery, the little Monoprix to the corner with the pharmacy. You’ll see the Viator there.

Restaurant tips: next door to the Brasserie Européen on bd Diderot is Aux Cadrans with good choice, good wholesome food.
The crêperie on rue de Lyon has gone way down in quality.
Bon voyage.

This article about the Gare de Lyon has a map of the station in it. My trains usually arrive in Hall2. So I walk to the end and keep walking through Hall 1’s fresque (fresco)gallery full of shops and eateries and exit. I then keep to the left and leave the station via the Parvis Louis Armand on the left side of the front of the station, the clock tower side. The other side of the front has moving and parked taxis and steps. Avoid that. This parvis takes you to Blvd Diderot where you cross the street at the light. That’ s rue de Lyon that dead-ends at the station. Your hotel is up the right side of rue de Lyon at an intersection at the pharmacy.

Thanks again Elizabeth for the link to the map of Gare de Lyon. However, I can't seem to print it out. There is an annoying advertisement for a PDF viewer in the middle of every page. Am I missing something, or is there a way to print out the station map without the PDF ads in the middle of it? Thanks for any further advice.

We stayed at Hotel Sleeping Belle in December, about 2 blocks north of Gare d’Lyon which was an easy walk. We enjoyed two meals at Aux Cadrans opposite the train station. I recommend you pop into Le Train Blu even if it is just to see the beautiful interior.
By the way, there is currently a lot of construction going on in front of Gare d’Lyon.

I found that one advantage to Booking.com is when you are booking several rooms at the same time - like 3. See what they have and maybe then go to the hotel web site. The Booking.com site is pretty easy to use. Some hotel sites are sometimes not all that user friendly.

Well, I'm glad I checked out this thread. We have a room at a hotel quite near the Gare de Lyon for just one night in Paris, on our way from Venice to Beaune. My concern was finding a place for a nice meal, since we'll be arriving in Paris about 7:30 on a Saturday evening. But Aux Cadrans sounds like just what we need!

Thank you all, especially Elizabeth and CAjan.
