Hotels in Beaune and Colmar

We are 2 couples planning a trip to Eastern France the first week in September. Looking for recommendations for hotels in Beaune and Colmar that are between 'budget' and luxury. We will have a rental car, but prefer places that are walking distance from hotels and train station.

Do you mean Beaune? We much prefer it to Colmar which we didn’t care for.
We have visited Beaune several times and stayed at Hotel LeCep or rented homes. Charming small city.

In Beaune you might want to consider Hotel des Ramparts. In Colmar Hotel St. Martin. We were well pleased with both of them, and one can walk to almost anywhere of interest in both towns.

Yes I did mean Beaune in France. Thank you for the correction. Why did you not like Colmar?

My two cents--Lots of people love Colmar. We liked it quite a bit, very picturesque. That said, I would only spend two nights, tops, in Colmar and a few more days in one of the smaller, insanely adorable wine villages on the Alsace wine route. We stayed in Eguisheim, but there are other good choices.

We spent several days in Strasbourg and loved it. Then we moved to a picturesque wine village, Riquewehr. One day while staying there we took a day trip to Colmar since RS seemed to rave about it. It did not measure up in our estimation to any of the wine villages nor Strasbourg. We didn’t find it charming or worth the time we spent there. We are not the only ones who feel this way. Why travel so far and then not stay in wine village?
Friends who lived in Germany spent a lot of time in the wine villages and recommended hotels and restaurants. Colmar did not compare well to us. Nothing bad but there are better places to stay in the area.

I enjoyed both places.

In Colmar I stayed at the Hotel Ibis Style Colmar Centre. In Beaune I stayed at the Hotel Ibis Style Beaune Centre.

Both hotels were within walking distance of just about everything. In both places, I walked from the train station to the hotel.

Both were clean, quiet and the included breakfasts were very nice.

Would you consider an apartment (or 2) instead of a hotel in Colmar? We really enjoyed our stay in one of the apartments at Reflets Sur La Lauch, right on the canal in Petite Venise. The view from our terrace is the one you see in the photo on the main page, looking across the canal to the half-timbered houses opposite. This is right by a main bridge and very close to the town square.

You could book separate 1-bdr apartments in the building, or share one of the larger apartments.

We are, fwiw, firmly in the “I love Colmar” camp.

Colmar didn’t have the appeal for us of Strasbourg or the wonderful Alsatian wine villages; we stayed in Strasbourg and Riquewehr.
Colmar was ok but compared to the others nearby, it didn’t compare. We were sorry we had wasted a day visiting it. Friends felt the same way. To each his own.
As mentioned before, we have stayed in Beaune at Le Cep several times.

I would not stay again at either Hotel des Ramparts or its sister hotel Hotel des Tonneliers. I stayed at each on different RS tours. Both are now run by the kids of the family who owns them and they are just not very nice. Our tour guide last year was Steve Smith (author of the RS France book) and he was not pleased with our stay.

We much prefer it to Colmar which we didn’t care for.

We didn't love it, either.

We stayed at Les Remparts in Beaune. Our room was lovely, but it was up about 50 stairs, and the beams were so low in the room that I could hit my head (I'm 5' 2").

Colmar is often preferred for those that are not renting a car because they can get buses or day trips from there. Also, there are quite a few museums in Colmar.

I will admit that a large factor in our affection for Colmar, apart from the lovely view we had from the terrace of our apartment, was the fact that we happened upon a little festival in the town square, with music and dancing. Everyone was dancing—-old men with delighted small children, young men with their grandmothers, all having fun together. It was a small-town event just for themselves, not put on for tourists (although we were welcome to participate).

We also had a lovely dinner at a nice small restaurant I found. (But do not ask me to remember the name!)

Lola, similar to us. We were only in Colmar the one night, but it was September and there was a big wine festival. I believe it had to do with drinking newly made wine. We also found a restaurant we really enjoyed. We had our first Tarte Flambe! We've had it many times since, and I've started to make my own.

That said, there were wonderful restaurants in charming Eguisheim.

We thought Colmar might have more options for restaurants than smaller towns. Eguisheim looks charming, does it have good restaurants?

We enjoyed the restaurants in Eguisheim, but there were not a lot. We didn't make reservations and were lucky we got fed.
