Hotels in Annecy France

Hi Everyone!

Hubs and I are late joiners for the September 25 - October 6 My Way Alpine Tour. We've decided after the tour ends in Chamonix that we'll travel by bus (Ouibus?) to Annecy before going on to Geneva for two nights. Any advice on hotels in Annecy? I'd like to be in the old town - we don't need fancy, but would appreciate a friendly staff, clean room, comfortable bed and decent bathroom facilities. Quirky is fine. A view is always nice, but since we won't be in the room much, not that big of a deal. Looking forward to hearing your suggestions. Thank you! Liz

I stayed at Hotel du Chateau, which was in RS book. Very reasonable rates. It was wonderful and I would stay there again. The only caveat is that you need to be able to walk uphill for a couple of blocks because it is up by the chateau and not down in the center of old town, but as a senior female who is not in great shape I had no trouble with it. Lovely views, lovely flower filled courtyard, very clean, very nice staff, great bed. A quick 5 minute walk into the old town. Here is the website so you can check it out. Highly recommend it,

We stayed in a hotel that's not our norm, but it was so perfect for Annecy. I booked the cheapest room possible at the Imperial Palace Hotel, staying about the same time of year as you will be there. They upgraded us to a fantastic room with a walk-out terrace on the side of the building that looked over the lake. We were a few minutes from boat & bike rentals, walk in the direction away from town (we rented a small power boat the day we arrived & bikes the second day). Skip paying for breakfast at the hotel and walk a couple of blocks behind the hotel to eat the most amazing croissants & pastries at Boulangerie Patisserie Pan & Gato! We would salivate just thinking about what we would select each morning! There's also a small shop that sells good fresh fruit, etc. nearby.

The short walk to the center of town is a paved tree-lined promenade bordering the lake - very relaxing and lots of people enjoying the walk, sitting on the benches, etc. Normally we stay in the center of the historical portion of town, but we were here for the scenery. This hotel location gave us that completely, plus quiet nights' sleep, plus a lovely promenade to enjoy and quick walk to eat in town, also.

Enjoy your time in beautiful Annecy!

Thank you Nancy. I was looking at that hotel and also the Hotel de Palais de I'Isle. They both seem to have a lot of character. The uphill walk is manageable for us, particularly coming off the Alpine tour. I'll have another look at their website. The big draw for me regarding the Hotel de Palais de I'Isle were the canal views, but it appears they are very expensive and, in the big picture, not sure it would be worth it.

Thank you Jean. I will absolutely look at the Imperial Palace Hotel. Coming off of the Alpine Tour we will have seen a lot and originally were planning to stay an extra night in Chamonix then head to Geneva, but then I took a really good look at my RS map and I felt that Annecy was too close to pass up. I have the distinct feeling that I won't want to leave.

Liz,

My daughter & I enjoyed our stay at the Ibis Annecy Centre Vieille Ville Hotel. It was reasonably priced, clean, with friendly staff, and comfortable beds.
The hotel is only a few blocks from the train station, and there are many restaurants & the main shopping area nearby. We loved Annecy! Hopefully you'll be there on a market day!

Make sure you try the delicious ice cream at Glaces des Alpes!

Have a wonderful trip!

Edited to add...
There are two Ibis hotels in Annecy, so make sure you choose the one in the old town. The other one is on the outskirts of the town.

The old town market is on Friday and Sunday and it was one of my favorites in France. They also have a market on Tuesday but I think that one is produce only. Friday and Sunday have lots of products other than produce. I was there on a Friday and it was quite large and there was other food products (cheese, meats, sweets, etc) and textiles. Loved it.

If you're considering a place not vouched for by posters here, read a bunch of online reviews, looking for comments about noise level. Annecy's old-town streets were absolutely packed when I was there for a couple of weekdays in June. I hope your time period will be quieter, but if you're staying within the old town, I think double-glazed windows will be essential.

I stayed at the same Ibis as Priscilla -- no charm, but good location and the hotel does the job. For charm, either of the ones that the early posters mentioned sound good. Annecy is a beautiful town.

Thank you so much to all of you who responded to this post! After searching and reading reviews for several hours I decided on the Splendid Hotel - it is on the edge of the old town and close to the lake and canal. It is more expensive than the Ibis and Hotel de Chateau but less expensive than the Imperial Palace. I did shy away from the Ibis only for the reason that we stayed in two Ibis hotels on our RS My Way Europe Tour in 2015. The Munich Ibis was perfectly acceptable, but our room in Beaune was not good - peeling paint, holes in the plastic lampshades and hard-to-navigate bathroom. We said nothing due to not wanting to be perceived as grumps, and figured that it would even out eventually and it did - we had the best room in Lauterbrunnen, with a spectacular view of the falls and the Alps. There is something to be said for karma. Now our pre and post tour hotels are all booked and I can concentrate on the travel arrangements from Chamonix to Annecy and Annecy to Geneva. Thank you all again - this site is such a valuable resource and I want you to know how much you are appreciated for sharing your experiences.

Liz - you selected the hotel our tour stayed in last summer. It is a very nice hotel, recently remodeled, lovely balcony, great location. I think you'll love it.

Thank you Celeste! It is so nice to hear from someone who has stayed there. I'm already wishing we had more time in Annecy, but we will do our best to enjoy the time we do have. Getting there from Chamonix was a bit tricky, but I managed to book us in advance on the 2:40 pm Ouibus, and we'll arrive about 4:20 - I do hope the market is still going as it's a Friday. It's a lot like the RS tour we were on - arrive in the late afternoon, have the rest of the day and all of the next day to explore, then back on the bus, or in our case, the train to Geneva (late Sunday morning.) Since this trip is really spontaneous I expected a bit more difficulty when booking things, but everything is falling into place rather nicely. We are very excited about it!
