Hotel in Nimes - Maison Albar L'Imperator

Loved it - and loved Nimes! The hotel is located adjacent to the gardens and just a short walk to the Arena and Roman museum. It is an elegant and historic hotel, where Hemingway, Picasso and - yes - Ava Gardner - once stayed. Rooms are very comfortable and quiet, beds are wonderful and hotel amenities (indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, bar and (expensive) restaurant more than you would normally find in French hotels. Staff were friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. There is a large plaza (Assas) just steps away with several very good restaurants (e.g., Table d'Assas), Very much enjoyed our stay.

(just to note - loved the hotel but were underwhelmed by the restaurants - the Brasserie is located in a hallway off the main reception area and is not conducive to a romantic dinner; the restaurant is very expensive). But - the hotel was wonderful!

Thanks for the review. I visited Nimes as a day trip from Arles and fell in love with it! Next time I am in the area I will definitely be spending a few nights in Nimes, so am adding this hotel to my list.

We loved Nimes ... stayed in an Airbnb within walking distance of everything. Interesting historical note ... when Levi Strauss emigrated to the US he settled in San Francisco and resumed his career as a tailor making work pants for workers going north to the Alaska gold fields. He used the sturdy blue cloth he used in France where he made work pants for French workers. His pants became known as the pants from Nimes ... de Nimes. Voila! Today the fabric is known as denim.
