French onion soup

We would like to get vegetarian french onion soup at a recommended restaurant for that dish. Can anyone recommend restaurants with great french onion soup that is vegetarian?
Thanks?

That is a big ask. French Onion Soup is more a thing in the US than France. When it does appear in France, it is a Winter dish, and by very definition, it is a soup with a beef base.

I would maybe start by searching for a vegetarian restaurant in the towns you plan on visiting, Paris would be more of a possibility than most, then look at menus.

I agree with Paul. French onion soup is not something I see on French menus. If you are wanting it to be truly vegetarian, go to a vegetarian restaurant. Paris is your best bet because of all the options. If you look at Julia Child's recipe, it includes a beef stock.

Okay, thanks! I didn’t realize it was more of a thing in the US. I will look for some vegetarian restaurants and see what they have.

My husband loved the onion soup in Obernai at l’Agneau d’Or. I have no idea if it was vegetarian.

French onion soup is all over brasserie menus.

I don't know anything about finding a vegetarian version though.

It's definitely a brasserie dish and traditionally the recipe calls for a beef stock base. I think it might be a bit difficult to find a brasserie that will make a vegetarian one, the French don't like to mess around with the classics.

I just returned from a week in Paris, onion soup gratin was on lots of menus I passed. Sorry, I have no idea of vegetarian menus.

It comes and goes into and out of fashion. Since COVID old fashion dishes are in favor.

Le Potager du Marais does a vegan French onion soup. My niece who is a vegan thinks that it is quite good.

My daughter is vegetarian. She resigned herself to "loosening up a bit" in Europe. She did have French Onion Soup a few times. What she can't tolerate is bits of meat in anything, and I get that.

At home, I make vegetarian onion soup for her. I use more onions and let them caramelize with a bit of sugar for a long time being careful not to burn them. I then use a good vegetable stock, and do some nice slices of toasted baguette with Gruyere cheese and then it goes under a broiler.

The best onion soup I ever tasted was smack in the middle of summer in Lyon, France. I do agree that a vegetarian version may be a tough find.

Thanks again for the replies!
JHK, the restaurant you mentioned sounds great, Le Potager du Marias. We will give it a try and if they have french onion soup at the time that will be great and if not it sounds like a great place to eat anyway.
