We plan to spend two nights in Chartres before our Paris and Heart of France tour. Is anyone able to recommend hotel accomodations?
Any other Chartres recommendations beyond the Cathedral?
Hi,
What is your budget?
At the higher end, about €150/night, Grand Monarque (Best Western) is really excellent. I go there every year or so for R&R weekends.
Otherwise, Chartres is mostly about the cathedral, but not only. The other 2 main churches (St Pierre and St Aignan) are very much worth a visit as well, and if you have more time, Maintenon castle and park is a short train ride away.
Thank you for mentioning the Grand Monarque which I did not know about and specific recommendation of St Pierre and St Aigan churches. We will be in Chartres for two nights so should have time for all your suggestions.
On Grand Monarque, I'll add that the base rooms ("Comfort" if not mistaken), are sometimes a hair tight. One category up is usually €30 more and has more room for luggage and all.
There seem to be plenty of other good places to stay in Chartres anyway.
We stayed here 2 nights on our RS Loire to the South of France tour. https://www.campanile.com/fr/hotels/campanile-chartres-centre-gare-cathedrale It was a short walk from the train, & 5 minutes from the Cathedral. I understand the hotel has been refurbished since our stay in 2013. It was comfortable, view of Cathedral, clean and it had a nice breakfast.
I plan to visit Chartres in the Fall, and in addition to the Cathedral and the stained glass museum (and those other two churches - thanks for that!), I hope to see La Maison Picassiette. It was the creation of a cemetery worker, who covered his entire house and the furniture in ceramic tiles. I’m into outsider art (woah, pun!), so if you are too, you might want to see it. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/la-maison-picassiette
Thanks for the tip, Inbsig; we're going to spend a few days in Chartres before our RS tour that begins there.
And I've heard the stained glass workshop is well worth seeing.
When we were in Chartres, there was a light show on the cathedral and other places around town. We very much enjoyed walking down along the river. We stayed at an Ibis quite close to the cathedral if you are looking for a budget priced room. Ibis are spotless and totally without charm but we've used them occasionally and they are reliable and staff is helpful.
We liked the location and price of the former monastery rooms mentioned in Rick's book.
I adore the sounds of the La Maison Picassiette. Thank yoj
@cala, are you referring to the Hotellerie St. Yves? I’m planning to stay there. Will report back.
Sallymoxley, when is your tour? We'll be staying in two different establishments in Chartres in May. I will definitely report on them afterward.
As a couple others have mentioned, the stained glass museum is worth a couple of hours. Also, the light show in the evening is spectacular https://www.chartresenlumieres.com/en/
inbsig, yes. It was so nice to be able to walk across the street to see the light show at the cathedral.
We booked a lodging on a popular booking site because, in large part, of their close proximity to the Cathedral. Turned out they had moved some time ago, but the info was not updated. If wanting a specific area, I would check the address.
