Does anyone have a recommendation for lodging in the Chamonix area? We will be hiking and prefer to stroll around the town in the evening.

Hi
we stayed in Apartment Le Genepi
this was a ground floor, (street level)
51 Promenade des Sonnailles,
This is just off and behind Rue de Joseph.
Less than 100metres (yards) from pedestrian areas of Chamonix.
Blockout roller shutters and double glazed,
kitchen, single bedroom with double sofa bed as well.
All very comfy.
Keys were collected and dropped off at Happy Services Chamoix,
very walkable from the Apartment, main parts of Chamoix and the Train Station.
It was via Booking.com,
Also Bistro des Sports, La Tablee , Restaurant Bizes and Le Boccalatte Brasserie were all good.

If you don't mind a slightly rustic (lots of wood), though quite nice place, I would recommend Hôtel Oustalet. Clean, quiet, good food, and easy access to the téléphérique to Aiguille du Midi.

I would second the recommendation for Hotel Oustalet. I stayed there two nights on my visit to Chamonix and found it very satisfactory and the employees very pleasant.
