Chamonix Hotel de L'Arve

We booked three nights in the Hotel de L'Arve in October 2023, based on Rick's recommendation in his France guidebook. We had booked a one-bedroom apartment, which sounded lovely, spacious, and functional on the hotel's website. When we entered the unit, we immediately noticed how hot it was; the thermostat was set to 30 degrees C (86 F)! We changed that, but then were dismayed to find out the bedroom and shower were down some narrow and somewhat treacherous stairs; in addition, there was no window for ventilation in the bedroom, and the toilet was upstairs. I'm 70 years old with bad knees, so the thought of middle-of-the-night trips up those stairs in the dark was not what I desired. We asked to switch to a room with everything on one level. After much checking, the hotel staff told us there was only one room, a "standard double" available, so we took it. It was a very small room with a very small bathroom, and had the tiniest shower I have ever tried to use! We had to run the shower for five minutes to get hot water, and there were only two electrical outlets in the room. After repeated requests, the staff insisted they had nothing bigger to offer us.

The next morning, I checked the hotel website and found out they did, in fact, have superior rooms available for our dates. You would think the hotel would want to go out of their way to cater to travelers who mention the Rick Steves endorsement, but the Hotel de L'Arve seems to do just the opposite. GIVE THIS HOTEL A MISS!

Hi I agree. We were there in this month too. Booked a 1 bedroom and had similar experience. Although there were 2 bathroom, onl1 the one upstairs in the main floor had a toilet. The one downstairs next to the bedroom did not, just a shower and sink. It was also very spartan. I was also disappointed.

I always double check the RS recommended lodgings with the booking.com reviews. I believe that only folks who have actually stayed in the lodging can leave reviews. In years past, I have also experience a few RS recommended hotels to which I would never return! I also trust the individual recommendations that are posted here.
Thx for sharing. Sorry.

Yikes!
It was our hotel on the Easter France tour in 2018 and I recall liking it a lot. Sorry to hear it seems to have gone downhill.

Hi It does get very good reviews on the booking sites. I actually didn't know that it was a RS recommendation in the guide book.
For me the 1 bedroom apartment, though large and roomy was underwhelming due to the layout. It did have all the basics and was well appointed and clean. It really was probably for a small group that was skiing. It had rack for boots, skis. Kitchen had everything you would need to make your meals etc. For me and my husband, having the bedroom in the basement area was not ideal and is described by the original poster as down a couple flights of stairs. I am not able to comment on the main hotel.

We stayed at Hotel de l’Arve in 2005, a long time ago, based on RS recommending it in his guidebook and did not like it at all.

Next time we were in Chamonix we stayed at Hotel Morgan and loved it.

We’ve stayed at 10 RS recommended hotels over the years and only liked 2 out of the 10 so we stopped following his recs.

We use Booking.com exclusively. And yes, only people that really did stay can leave a review. I always read the reviews carefully and we’ve liked every one we’ve stayed in.

I stayed there in late September on the Rick Steves My Way Alpine tour and had a wonderful room, single supplement. Sorry you had a less than desirable experience.

We've stayed there on two different RS tours and both times had normal rooms. The second one had a deck with an amazing view of Aiguille du Midi. They do have elevators, but the staircase going up from the lobby is really steep!

We found a wonderful room in Paris using RS book, but we have also had a doozy of a room in Padua where our Village Italy tour started. I read posts about people liking that hotel, and all I can think is that they didn't have the room we stayed in;)

I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience at Hotel de L'Arve. I find that my whole day can be affected, to an extent, when I know I have to go back to lodging that I'm not loving.
