I've noticed that all recommendations for French hotels in both the Guide to Europe and Guide to France include asterisks, in addition to the $ symbols. What do the asterisks indicate? It is not noted in the guide to symbols in the print edition.
Are you talking about the Rick Steves guide? In my France book, the explanation appears under the ””Sleeping in Paris” section. France uses a star system (1 to 5) to rate hotels based on amenities. A hotel with 3 asterisks is one rated 3 stars.
p.s. This website has a pretty good explanation of France’s hotel rating system

VERY helpful, Laura. Thank you!
The asterisks likely indicate the official star rating of French hotels, reflecting their quality and amenities. If unclear, you might contact the guide’s publisher for confirmation!
