We are scheduled to fly DFW to HEL with only 40 minutes before our next flight to Berlin. Is it possib;e to make that connection?
Our return trip would have us only 1 hr 10 in Madrid before leaving for Chicago. Would that work?
Is DFW-HEL-BER all on one ticket?

You will have to go through immigration both in HEL and MAD.
I would say the 40 mins in Berlin is too tight. You have no room for error. If you arriving flight is late or if you are buried in the back of plane and take extra time getting off you are screwed. The return is OK but still tight.
Again, I've never been able to understand why so many Americans speak in airport codes.
But since you've posted this in the Finland forum I'm assuming you are arriving from somewhere in North America and have 40 minutes at Vanda before your flight to Berlin leaves? If that is the case I'm going to say that it is very optimistic and I would not be surprised if you miss the flight to Berlin.

I would get a seat as close to the front of the plane as possible. I would also scout out which gate the DFW to HEL flight usually parks at and which gate the HEL to BER flight usually leaves from. If they are in different terminals or if you have to take a shuttle that further complicates things. Of course the day of they can change gates but at least you can get familure with the layout of the HEL airport so you don't have to waste time getting oriented.
