Scandinavia Winter Trip

Hi!
I am planning a trip to Scandinavia for Dec. 25, 2024-Jan 5, 2025. I would love to see the Northern Lights, Copenhagen, stay in an ice hotel and a glass dome, go on a husky dogsled ride, see reindeer, see the Fjords, and learn about the traditions of the Sami people.
I am flying in from Boston with my 24 year old daughter. We'll have 11 days. I'd love to know what others have experienced on a similar trip - any advice is welcomed! My daughter is very interested in history and mentioned the Tirpitz musuem.
I am open to any suggestions that you think are must see destinations and experiences. I am late to booking this trip and need to act fast as I know many places will be booked.
Thank you!
Jeanine

We went to Copenhagen and several locations in Norway last September/October (not winter), and I think we got back here be exactly one year ago, to the day. We’d thought about going waaaay north, to Tromsø, Norway, and our research indicated that winter is actually her most popular time of year there. Our time and finances didn’t allow including Tromsø on that trip, so it’s still on the list for a future visit. Northern Lights (provided it’s not an overcast sky), ice hotel, glass cathedral that looks like it’s made of ice, dog sled rides, Sami culture, Tromsø was described as being the epitome of places for those experiences. Fjords can be found up and down Norway; besides Tromsø, also pick a place like Bergen, Trondheim (we really enjoyed both of those cities), to round out your itinerary.

In Denmark, we also made a day trip to Roskilde from Copenhagen to see its viking ship museum, but didn’t go to the Tirpitz Museum. There are ferries between Denmark and Norway, but we took fast, relatively cheap flights on Norwegian Air to go between the two countries. plus locations in Norway. You could fly to/from Tromsø, much faster than using other means. We also rented a car, which was helpful around fjord country. Electric cars are a big deal in Norway, and it was a bit of a learning curve figuring out how, where, and when to charge it.

A good start would have been to post in the appropriate forum. Then I'd suggest that you really start thinking about what you want to see and do and what is most important to you. Because you are planning a lot for 11 days, especially since there are several holidays that will affect opening hours at museums and other places you might want to visit. Do not underestimate the time it takes to travel from one place to another.

Which Tirpitz museum is your daugther interested in? The one in Denmark or the one in Norway? Hopefully the former as it is much easier to reach.

Have you booked any flights? SAS has direct flights between Boston and Copenhagen so that is a good start.
