We are planning on 4 nights in Helsinki. Any recommendations for hotels in a central area? We won’t have a car so walking is o.k. Thanks.
First of all, Helsinki is very walkable and well served by transit.
My economy hotel of choice is the Hotel Arthur: https://www.hotelarthur.fi/en/
The Hotel Arthur is about a 0,5 km walk to/from Helsinki's central train station. Airport buses also terminate at the train station. (I was last at the Arthur about 10 years ago but it seems to be still getting decent Trip Advisor reviews (3.5/5).
More recently (2 years ago) we were with a group at the Scandic Grand Marina (long story of why we used a travel agent) before and after our trip north. Scandic is more upscale than the Arthur but farther from the train station (about a mile walk). It is near the Viking Line Terminal.
The bottom line is Helsinki is a clean and safe feeling town and very walkable. I don't think you could go too wrong with a random pick.
If you are there in the summer, some of the business class hotels have very good prices. In August 2014, we stayed at Glo Hotel Kluuvi which was a great location, just off the Esplanade and about a 10 minute walk from the train station.
