We plan to take a ferry from Helsinki to Tallin in September. I understand there are several ferry companies that do that route. I have looked on their websites to find out how luggage is stored. We will wach have a 22 inch suitcase and are wondering if we need to book checked luggage in advance.

We traveled on the Eckero ferry in May. On the boarding level, not far from the entrance, are areas with luggage lockers. I don't recall the exact cost but I believe it was €5-6 for a large locker. We travel with 22" suitcases and small backpacks; we probably could have finagled everything into one locker but decided to make it easy and go with two. Payment was by credit card. A luggage room was also available, but we didn't know how long the retrieval line would be when we reached Tallinn.
I would advise finding a place to sit early in the crossing!

I did the same. I found an empty locker.
You can keep it with you. It's only a two hour crossing.
