Flying Oslo to Helsinki. With my fare I get a carryon and personal item both of which meet size specs. Problem of weight, combined can be no more than 8kg? Am I understanding that correctly? If so, would it really be checked? Ive got 10kg in carryon alone. Another 4 lb in personal item.
HI there,
I've seen them check carryon bags for weight and take them away at the gate for being overweight. Have not seen them weighing personal items, but I suppose it's possible.
have a good trip.
No, they just print those limits to scare people.
Okay, that was sarcasm. Yes, if the gate agent wants to be strict, they may check the bag if it is overweight.
If they have stated that, they most probably do mean that!
if your carry-on bag exceeds the maximum size/weight limitations, you will be charged a €60 fee to place this bag in the aircraft hold. Check your allowance below.

Given the financial incentive they have created for themselves, I would expect no slack in rule enforcement.
I read their rule to be that the combined (total) weight of the 2 pieces must be no more than 8kg
So your carry-on is 22 lbs. and your combined weight is 26 lbs. Assume you will have to check your carry-on.
If you don't want to check your carry-on, post your packing lists for both your carry-on and your personal item in the Packing forum if you would like help on reducing the weight.
How heavy is your empty carry on & personal bag? Posters on the forum travel with everything from 10+ lbs. to under 4 lbs carry-ons bags.
On a recent flight (I think it was London to Cork on Aer Lingus), all carryon luggage was weighed at check-in. Overweight bags were tagged and checked. The whole check-in setup was built around the scales. I hadn't seen a setup like this before. I expect it won't be the last time I see it, either.
If your bags are overweight, they don't fit the size specs because the specs include weight. You need to either reduce the weight or check the bag.
Thanks.Best not mess with it if there is active or even random screening. I'm influenced by a recent flight with same limits but no sign of scales at gate, or any other indication of weight check. Several quite substantial looking bags in the cabin which I reflected on with envy when my bag which I checked because of rules went astray for several days.
Thats making it tough on carryon for extended (month+) trips we take when my Rick Steves rollaboard starts with 7 lb empty.
It might be time to consider a different bag. The lightest bags are backpacks. I don't use one because I have a bad back.
The lightest rolling carryon I have found is the Osprey Ozone 2-wheel. It looks like the current version fits FinnAir's dimensions. The bag weighs less than 5 pounds.
I have an older version that is 22x14x9 and weighs 2kg.
Folks on the Forum like the TravelPro Maxlite 5, which weighs 5.4lbs, but it's 23in tall, so probably too tall for FinnAir (or domestic US carriers).
I tried linking to these bags, but my post wasn't allowed.
Hmmm, 2lbs lighter for the bag, say 1 kilo. Every little bit helps. I could probably shed enough too get the carryon to 8kg but no way carryon plus personal item. Looks to me like a way to force checked luggage with associated costs (revenues) via bag charges or upgraded fares.
