45L backpack vs. rolling carry-on for visit Finland (and perhaps ferry to/fro Tallinn?), Sweden and Norway late next summer. Husb is 83, I am 63 and we have travelled with both options in the past, I was wondering if "for this trip" that the backpacks would be the better choice? Thoughts?
I am 68 and switched from a carry on roller bag to a backpack two years ago. I love the ease of the backpack for a lot of reasons - especially for stairs, uneven pavement/cobblestones and getting on/off trains!
But for me, the deciding factor would be the weight of the contents you are bringing. I am relentless at keeping the total weight on my back at 13.5 pounds or less. That’s a comfortable weight using my Cotopaxi Allpa 35L which has a well-fitting waist/hip belt and puts no stress on my body. Seeing you’re considering a 45L backpack would put the anticipated packed weight way over my comfort level. I don’t want to risk any injuries causing my future trips to be cut.
And if you’re a shopper, I would select the rolling carryon.
I do have a backpack/suitcase, however i seldom use it.
We travel with a pair of 21" Travel Pro ultra lightweight carry on's with swivel wheels. Those wheels allow me to turn the suitcases sideways when going down airplane aisles..
My wife travels on a portable folding scooter, and I have to handle both bags. No problem at all--other than trying to keep up with her in airports. She easily outruns me.
Where are you going in these countries?
This past spring I was in Tallinn, took the Ferry to Helsinki (return visit) and went up to Turku. I've also been to Norway and Sweden.
I did all of if with a spinner and a small backpack. No problems.
For late summer, either way would work. For winter, I'd go with the backpack.
