Hello,
I have - 3 days between being in Stockholm and needing to get to Helsinki. II would like to spend some time in a quiet simple place and hike and/ or kayak. I. was thinking of taking a ferry to Aland islands, staying a couple of nights and then taking the ferry to Helsinki I see many islands in Stockholm’s archipelago that are mentioned in these posts as well and could do this instead and take ferry to Helsinki. A few questions: 1. Anyone been to both and have a preference (and why). 2. Seems I don’t need a car for Stockholm’s islands but do need a car for Aland? 3. Any favorite lodging either place? Thank you-katie
I can't help you with your choice as I have only been to Aland once for an hour at about 2am on the old overnight RT cruise from Stockholm.
However Mariehamn impressed itself on my mind, and has been on my visit list ever since. It says a lot when a city can do that at that time of night.
It is a good half day (or half night) from Stockholm then ferries run in mid afternoon and around 2am to Turku in mainland Finland.
There are also flights to Mariehamn Airport from Stockholm in 50 seat turbo prop planes with Populair (a PSO Swedish airline) and on Finnair to Helsinki.
I do know you don't need a car (from my prior research)- see details of bus and the free inter island ferries on Alandstrafiken
Choose Åland. That way you get more excitement as those islands are farther from any coast.
Thank you! I made reservations for Aland. I will report back on my experience when done.
