Expedition trip in and out of Helsinki with 3 days at end to explore. Taking a trip to Tallinn and a city tour with trip to Suomenilinna. Is it better to stay at airport hotel (staying at Hilton airport at end of expedition on 7/23) or book hotel closer to town? Also, is it possible to navigate trains/buses with one large and a carry on suitcases? Suggestions appreciated.
Where to stay depends on if you want to experience the city or the airport.
Yes it's possible to travel on trains/buses/trams/metro with luggage, people do it all the time.
I would stay in the center of the city where there are interesting restaurants and many things to do. It is easy to take a train to the airport at the end of your trip.
As I recall, the airport is quite a ways out of the city. I would stay in the city center to be able to take advantage of more of what Helsinki has to offer.
Catching the train from Helsinki to the airport with luggage is extremely easy. We had no issues at all in March.
I've stayed at that Hilton a couple of times when I had early morning flights. (The last time was last month.)
It is nearly an hour each way from the aiport to the center of the city.
Stay in Helsinki itself if you have three days. This way, if you want to head back to your hotel in the middle of the day, it's easy.
If you're taking the ferry to Tallinn, then the ports are nowhere near the airport. Much closer to the city center.
