TYPA Center in Tartu

I recently returned from the Baltic countries and want to share an under-the-radar visit that was very enjoyable. While in Tartu (great city!) our walking tour guide recommended the TYPA Printing and Paper Art Center. They have a collection of old printing presses (some manually operated, a few electric) as well as other print shop equipment. They print custom orders, recycle paper and other materials into their own paper, reuse book spines and covers in new products, etc. We took the one-hour tour (€7 for seniors), which turned into a nearly two-hour paper-making and printing experience. Only one other guest visited at the same time on a weekday afternoon. Our guide was very passionate and knowledgeable about the history of printing and use of "traditional" (OK, old!) equipment.

TYPA is an extended part of the Aparaaditehase complex, a former Soviet factory (secret sub parts made here!) that is now a cultural center. We enjoyed lunch at the Puhvet Cafe-delicious and reasonably priced
