Tallinn Ferry from Helsinki

My husband and I are taking a DYI tour of Baltic and Scandinavian capitals late August through early September. Looking for advice on a few transportation related things as we have minimal experience with ferries and trains.

Thanks in advance for your help!

We plan to take the Tallink Silja ferry from Helsinki; arriving in Tallinn 6:30pm

  • Do we have to store our luggage somewhere or can we keep it with us for this short journey?
  • How chaotic is disembarking in Tallinn? We will want to get a taxi to our hotel; do we need to be concerned that the recommended Tallink Takso cabs will all be gone if we aren’t among the first to get off?

You can keep your luggage with youbut there are storage lockers.

It's someone chaotic when boarding but there are taxis.

You might consider downloading the Bolt app. It's like Uber. I used them all over the Baltic states, Finland and Poland. This was in May of this year.

A friend of mine was a dancer in the cabaret on board the Helsinki to Tallinn ferry. Is it some sort of duty free loophole if memory serves? I seem to remember her telling me it was quite alcohol-fuelled at times. Her research 20 or so years ago was the foundation of where we are today with OLED screen technology. Multi-talented lass.

[edited to add: I'm going back to pre-EU days probably when the booze was cheaper in Estonia. I'd still be interested to know if it's anyone's current experience that people are sailing just to drink cheaply.]

In the last two years I took two overnight ferries between Stockholm and Turku (those were Viking) and one daytime ferry between Helsinki and Tallinn. I didn't notice significant drinking, but I crashed in my cabin early on the night ferries and may just have been oblivious.

There's maybe not the same huge disparity in the cost of alcohol between Finland and Estonia that there once was now everyone's in the EU. I had the impression that that route was a bit of a "booze cruise" for Finns looking to drink cheaply.

I'd add that my friend also worked as a childrens' entertainer on board, dressing up in a mascot costume and such, so it wasn't all adult-orientated.

Apologies to dhdanley for this aside in your thread. Hopefully it's semi-interesting.

Based on the same trip at beginning of this month:
There would be no issue storing luggage.
I don't remember chaos, but there were significant queues.

Regarding alcohol prices, beer in Helsinki worked out at about €10 for 40ml, where Tallinn was around €5 for 500ml. Drinks on board the ferry were significantly more expensive than Tallinn itself.

I seem to remember getting this impression from something in print from our host. But that was also Stockholm to Helsinki, not Tallinn, now that I think about it..

Apologies for aiding and abetting the sidetrack.
