Lithuanian heritage research

Since there is no forum on Lithuania I thought I would post this here. My husband and I will be traveling to Lithuania in a year or so and would like to learn more about my husband’s family. Has anyone used any services to research their heritage in Lithuania? He knows he has some family still there.

Thanks for asking this; I have the same family heritage interest and have been thinking of going there. And please be sure to post a report of your trip!

Hi,

Is his heritage in Lithuania Polish, Lithuanian, or German? The home town of his family? Bilingual or bi-cultural?

I will be interested in any information you get, as I am hoping to go to Lithuania next June to try to find any family history.

The family is Lithuanian - there might be some German. My husbands grandfather is from a town outside of Simonys - they think it might be Jurkstai due to how our last name is spelled in Lithuanian - Jurkstas. We do not speak any Lithuanian. We also know that we have family located in Kupiskis as we had a cousin visit us this summer from there.

Hi,

Thanks for the information. Based on your information, it's quite clear that the family is Lithuanian. Any members who might be part German would have lived most likely based on the 1910 census in the town of Klaipeda, which was then the Prussian town of Memel. At the northeastern tip of East Prussia, Memel was mostly German, the rural population in the hinterland of Memel was overwhelmingly Lithuanian. Your family members way to the east of Klaipeda were part of the Russian Empire.
