Does anyone know of any folk music venues in Tallinn (or Riga or Vilnius)? Either concerts or pubs. Is there a source to find out what's happening that will help me distinguish between folk an other kinds of music? We will be going in August.
I would contact the tourist information center for each city as a lot of the real traditional folk stuff is in respective Baltic language so hard to find doing a search in English
But I know: in Riga a pub with live folk music (but depending on the evening some of it is American influence) :

Tallinn has a folk festival late July 2017 http://www.folk.ee/en/
You might get some ideas about local venues by contacting the organizers maybe e-mail or facebook
Lithuania :

Search this site for other kinds of music http://www.songkick.com/ by location and date
Thank you for those links. We're already committed to a trip in August. It seems we are always missing festivals!

well you will be better prepared in your approach the next time
I know as I always include music after a day of sight seeing not matter where I travel
No, we probably won't know better. This isn't the first time. Late August is about the earliest we schedule our vacations. September is more usual. (We decided not to to push our luck with Baltic weather.) Festivals are more common in early summer. It's a trade-off we've come to accept.
