I have mentioned this in another post, but this is a part of our trip this coming July which I am still unsure about. We will be flying from Zurich to either Heathrow or London City airport, then would like to go to Norwich. The reason we are not thinking of staying in London overnight is because we will be in London for several days earlier in the summer. Will this be a very long day? Is one airport preferable for continuing on to Norwich? We will be taking the train after we arrive in London, to Norwich.
Thanks for any suggestions.
You can fly to Norwich itself via Amsterdam with KLM. Maybe pricey but quick.
Alternatively Stansted (STN) is the nearest London airport and has direct trains to Norwich in about 2 hours or less.
Both options much easier than routing through central London.
You can reach Norwich by direct train from London Liverpool Street Station, which is quick and easy from London City Airport. Take the DLR from the airport to Bank Station, and either walk or take a taxi to London Liverpool St. Google map says it is 0.4 mile, a 9-minute walk.
Or you could walk from the airport to Custom House Station and take the Elizabeth Line right to Liverpool St. tube station, and walk to the train station from there.
Another route from LCY to Norwich is the DLR to Stratford then train direct from Stratford to Norwich in 1 hour 50 minutes.
Hi, I agree with suggestion above to visit Norwich via Amsterdam if you haven't booked flights already. I visit family in Norwich at least once a year from Sydney and this is by far the easiest and least stressful route to take. Avoids London airports and traffic! Norwich is a beautiful small city with lots to recommend it. Enjoy your trip!
I would choose either Stansted Airport or London City Airport for Norwich. From Stansted (STN) there is a direct train taking a little under 2 hours. Some schedules have your do 1 change in Ely.
From London City, (LCY) you do not need to go into Liverpool Street station, instead, use the DLR to Stratford. From Stratford you can take a direct train to Norwich or there maybe a required change somewhere like Colchester or Chelmsford. (Greater Anglia rail). This is very easy to do and there are several trains doing this route each day. Travel time is 1.5 - 2 hours.
Check the Trainline app or website for train schedules. You can also buy from this app, but it will charge a fee of a few dollars.
Having been through STN several times and London City, I find LCY is a smaller and easier airport to get in and out of. I know Swiss and BA do direct flight from Zurich into LCY.
Thanks for all the replies. We finally did buy our tickets to fly into London City Airport. The plane arrives at 15:30 on a Tuesday, then we will take the Docklands Light Rail to Strattford, then I think the Greater Anglia to Norwich.
Anything else we should be aware of in doing this in the later afternoon and possibly not arriving until the evening, I am guessing?
Arriving at that time on a Tuesday afternoon you are into peak afternoon pricing, and you can't book a timed Advance Ticket due to flight uncertainties.
So an Anytime Single Stratford to Norwich is £87.80.
If the flight is on time you are heading for the 1707 train from Stratford, scheduled to use Platform 10 and is 12 cars long (head for the front of the platform where it should be quieter)
After that the next direct is at 1839, but you can take the 1726 Clacton or 1756 Ipswich trains and same platform change at Colchester into a Norwich which is first stop out of London Colchester (Platform 10- 10 cars and Platform 8- 10 cars respectively)
For information London bus #473 also runs from LCY to Stratford Bus and Rail Station.= taking 30 minutes.
Thank you so much Stuart! So helpful!
Any reason we should chose the bus verses DLR to Strattford?
When should we buy the anytime tickets from Strattford to Norwich to have that rate?
Also, we are going to buy a two together pass since our old one is outdated. Can we have the year’s start time be delayed until our first trip with our new pass, meaning can we buy tickets with the pass now but not have the start time be until the day we first use it on a train? Hope that makes sense.
I mentioned the bus partly for the record of others reading this in the future for their own travels and partly because if I'm paying that much on a train ticket I'm going to be a tight wad miser elsewhere, personally.
But also in my view Stratford is not the most exciting place in London and nor is the shopping mall opposite. So if the flight is on time and you are straight out of the airport you have time to kill- so may as well use that time on a bus ride. Or maybe that's just how my mind works.
Because you are on a full price ticket it doesn't matter if you buy it ahead of time or at Stratford station when you arrive. There are no seat reservations on Greater Anglia, so no obvious reason to buy ahead at all, except for peace of mind.
If you do purchase ahead, then yes you can select a Two Together Fare, but don't need the actual pass in your 'hand' until the moment you travel- thus deferring purchase.
BTW- I was just checking acting on an educated hunch- National Express run a bus from Stratford Bus Station to Norwich Bus Station with just one stop at the University of East Anglia (Norwich)- leaving at 1855 , arriving at 2125. Tonight (in 4 hrs time) that is £22.30 each, so way less than the train.
But for a random Tuesday in July it is just £9.10 each.
i was just mulling over somewhere to eat, if you ended up waiting at Stratford and found something I'd totally forgotten about (as I tend to switch trains inside the station)- outside Stratford Station is Robert the Tank Engine- a red painted steam Locomotive built in 1933. Red because it was built as an industrial locomotive in an Iron Mine.
And I never knew that outside Maryland Station (the next Elizabeth Line station a few minutes after Stratford) is the Cart and Horses Pub- the birthplace of the rock band Iron Maiden.
the things you learn on these Forums!! Stuart, I never had you pegged as an Iron Maiden aficionado. GerryM, maybe, but not you.
