Yorkshire Dales or North York Moors?

My husband is I will be in London in mid April and have 5 nights to spend in the countryside. We have never been to either of these areas. Which area should we choose? We will be taking a train from London and then would like to have a rental car. We would like to enjoy charming villages, beautiful landscape and do some easy hiking. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You might consider spending 3 or 4 of those nights at an HF Holidays country house with a Guided or Self-Guided walking emphasis. This is a member-owned cooperative (but non-members are welcome at their facilities and programs) with manor houses all over the UK with hiking-focused weekend or weekday programs. The programs are all-inclusive (lodging, all meals, hiking leaders, an transport to the trailheads if you book guided; otherwise lodging, all meals, and access to the trail maps, books and guides for the local area for self-guided. We have enjoyed several holidays with them and can vouch for the quality of the food, lodging, and the volunteer guides. We also enjoy the camaraderie of the other guests (mostly, but not all, from the UK).

They have two locations in the Yorkshire Dales and one in the North York Moors. I will post links to brochures for the 3- and 4-night programs at each. Even if you do not care to join them, or the dates on offer do not align with your trip dates, you can get some ideas of what to see and where to hike in each area.
