Hi
We are wrapping up our trip driving from York to Gatwick. Looking for suggestions if there is any interesting stops along the way.
Thanks,
Harrogate one way, Lincoln the other.
Oxford one way, Cambridge the other.
Bletchley Park one way, Peterborough Cathedral the other.
Newton's home (and the home of his apple tree) at Woolsthorpe House one way, Hardwick Hall the other.
To be honest there are dozens.
Your question doesn't have a lot of detail. What would be interesting to you? What sort of things have in your mind that you would like to see before heading home? If nothing calls out you can get to Gatwick really easily from York with one really easy connection. Much easier and faster, and likely less expensive than driving to Gatwick on the A1 and M1 and M25.
Is there a reason you want to drive?
How many hours or days have you got for the drive from York to Gatwick?
I'd suggest dropping the car & taking the direct train to London, then from Victoria Station the train to Gatwick? Or, is Gatwick where you picked up the car & need to return it? What types of things to you like? There are several options.
I should have included more detail. We are wrapping up a 30 day car trip and will drive from York to Gatwick where we need to return the car. After that we train to it to London. We only have the one day to travel York to Gatwick. We are interested in cars, motorcycles, Roman’s and pretty much anything else that would be interesting.
Thanks
In that case it would be really beneficial to be able to leave the car in York and just train to London. It’s a long and horrible drive from York to Gatwick. and then you’re backtracking to London. The M25 London orbital is very often a huge traffic jam.
York to Gatwick is going to be about five hours drive and could be a lot longer depending on how congested the M25 is, and whether you are goiung to the east of London using the Dartfoird Crossing or to the west. You aren't going to have a lot of time for sight seeing.
For motorcycles and cars you have two options
The Transport Museum in the centre of Coventry or the National Motorcycle Museum just off the M42 near Birmingham Airport
For the former you come off the M1 down the M69 and the later the A42 leading to M42
For both afterwards you take the M40 towards London
