We are planning to take trains and the bus to Keswick from York. I see that the cheapest is on the Transpennine Express line and then just a bit more expensive is the Northern line.
I was wondering if there is any reason to go one route or another. The transfer time in Newcastle is only ten minutes. Is that enough time to get to our next train?
The only reason to favour one route over another is scenery.
Do you want to see South Pennines scenery, the Settle/Carlisle line scenery or the River Tyne scenery?
Ten minutes is ample time for the Newcastle change.
It is just over a bridge from platform to platform.
Worst case is you miss your train (due to the inbound being late) and there is another one from Newcastle to Carlisle 30 minutes later with automatic next train availability. On the NCL-Carlisle line it would be very rare to get a guard who even looks at what time you were meant to be travelling.
Likewise Carlisle to Penrith. In fact on the CAR to PEN dash it would be unusual even to have a ticket check.
Thanks so much! Since we are a bit older and move a but slower, I was concerned about the 10 minutes. But if we can get on the next train that is great!
