York to Edinburgh

I want to plan a tour from york to edinburgh next year with my spanish partner. We have 2 weeks and there are so many places between the 2 cities i need suggestions of best places to see, perhaps from a foreigner's point of view.

Are you just interested in locations between York and Edinburgh? Or are you interested in visiting other places in Britain as well, maybe doing a loop and ending in Edinburgh? if it's just spots between the two, then I recommend Durham and the nearby Beamish Open-Air Musuem, Hadrian's Wall, and Keswick in the Lakes District. There are also several places you could visit as day-trips from Edinburgh, such as Stirling, St. Andrews and Glasgow.

It would be easier to suggest what is best for you to see if we had an idea of what interests you and your Spanish partner? What sort of thing do you want to see?

Preserved trains?
Gardens?
Churches?
Seaside?
Art?
Modern art?
Countryside?
Historical locations?
Villages?
Towns?
Cities?

What time of year?

Will you be driving or taking trains and/or buses?

What caused you to choose the two points - York and Edinburgh? What attracted you?

Are you a British resident? Or coming from North America?

And, by the way, usually using all CAPITAL letters on the internet is interpreted as shouting. Do you need to use all caps?

Do you have two weeks between the cities, or two weeks total include both cities? Big difference.

I LOVE Whitbey and the moors to the east of York. There numerous charming towns and castles in southern Scotland along the inner route between Newcastle and Edinburgh. Or the coastal route is gorgeous. Newcastle-Upon-Tyne is a bit industrial, but well worth an overnight if you have plenty of time. The other's suggestions are excellent too.

Hi Douglas

In answer to your question, we have 2 weeks after York. For me, as Brit, it's just so difficult to choose where to show my partner as 2 weeks barely scratches the surface! Hence my request for ideas.
Many thanks for your suggestions.

Lynn, the obvious:

  • Whitby and/or Robin Hood's bay. Drive across the moors to get there.
  • Durham
  • Hadrian's wall
  • Lindisfarne

Sorry, this is not a "foreigner's point of view.", I am also a Brit.

We have visited that area several times and since we live on the west coast of the United States,
I guess we qualify as "foreigners."

These are what we felt were the highlights of the area: Yorkminster, York shambles, walking the walls around York.

Heading inland, all those lovely abbeys in the Yorkshire Dales and Ivlet Bridge.

Heading east, we enjoyed Whitby, especially those steps to the abbey on a blustery day. Robin Hoods Bay was interesting, but we didn't see a single soul while we walked from the top of the hill down to the water!

In Northumberland, we enjoyed Alnwick Gardens ( but didn't care much for Alnwick Castle - too restored), Barter Books in Alnwick, lots of ruined castles in the area, and the part of Hadrian's Wall around Once Brewed.

We then enjoyed more ruined abbeys in the Borders region of Scotland and even more ruined castles.

Roslyn Chapel is worth an hour's stop, mainly to see the Apprentice Pillar.
Next summer, we will be heading up the west coast towards Glencoe, not directly to Edinburgh.

Our stops will include Castlerigg Stone Circle, Caerlaverock Castle, and Sweetheart Abbey.

Plenty in the area to enjoy for two weeks.

Hello Cynthia
Thanks for responding as a 'non Brit'. It's great for me to have the views of someone from a different country. You obviously love Scotland as you're going to return. I have plenty of time to plan this trip and hope that my partner will enjoy it enough to want to return too. We've been to quite a few places here in Spain and now it's my turn to show him the UK.
