We will be staying in York for two nights but we're interested in going to Lumley castle Hotel for the evening for an Elizabethan banquet. It looks like Durham is a 45 min train ride from York. Does anyone know if this hotel is within walking distance of the train station or would we need to take a cab?

The closest train station to Lumley Castle is Chester-le-Street, not Durham (Durham is the name of both a town and a county, so it's easy to get confused). Anyhow, I'd say it's a 20-25min walk to Lumley Castle from the station, so you may want to take a taxi.
Trains stop at Chester-le-Street less frequently than at Durham, so you'll need to check timetables to see if the train stops after your meal, or if you'll need a taxi to Durham for the train back.
Oh, and while at Lumley Castle, be sure to ask the staff about Lily Lumley. ;)
