Hello, is there a way to travel by train to a station nearby Chipping Camden from York? We could then get a taxi to complete the journey. We will be traveling on Sunday, October 12, 2014. Louise Wilson

Nearest station is Moreton-in-Marsh about 5 miles away. Chipping Campden station closed in 1966. You would change at Birmingham New Street and one of the 2 stations in Worcester. Journey is 4 hours or so.
Do you plan to have a car at all while visiting the Cotswolds? I will be doing your trip in reverse in September. Because we will have a car while staying in Chipping Campden, it seems to make the most sense to just drive to York and return the car there. If you plan to get a car at all while there, you might consider picking it up in York.
For bus service from Moreton-in-Marsh train station to Chipping Camden, see www.johnsonscoaches.co.uk or www.traveline.org.uk.
To reach Moreton-in -Marsh from York by train is rather an awkward journey involving several changes. In any case, I would go to Evesham if a suitable bus connects to Chipping Campden but I do not think this is your best route option.
I would go by train from York to Stratford-upon-Avon and then take a bus to Chipping Campden. If you go on www.nationalrail.co.uk and put in for YRK to SAV you will see the timings & fares. You will travel on a long distance express between York & Birmingham (New Street) & must then walk to Birmingham (Moor Street) to catch a local train to Stratford-upon-Avon. Birmingham is well worth a look & has some fine Victorian buildings. You may also like to wander around Stratford-upon-Avon en route.
Rather than buy one rail fare for the whole journey, you will probably find it cheaper to buy YRK to BHM in advance at www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk and then purchase the BMO to SAV ticket on the day at £7.30.
To get from Stratford-upon-Avon to Chipping Campden, you will use a local bus - unless you are picking up a hire car. You can find bus details here:>http://www.transportdirect.info/Web2/Home.aspx?&repeatingloop=Y
Wow...fab1 has definitely convinced me that keeping our car and driving from Chipping Campden to York is the way to go!
It would in theory be about half an hour shorter to drive than either of the public transport options above (the route via Stratford being just a little longer on average than via Worcester according to travel info but there isn't much in it either way). However, that doesn't take into account any stops.
The drive seems to be logistically easier, plus it could be done on our own timetable, rather than a train schedule. We have time to make a final decision.
Why don't you drive, driving is easy in the UK. It has some of the friendliest drivers in the world. Driving gives you the flexibility to make the drive part of your holiday stopping off enroute or stopping if you see the tourist signs, it really is easy. Public transport in the UK is Appauling I would not rely on buses even trains don't have the greatest reputation here...ask anyone in the UK about wet leaves, wrong type of snow etc. etc . I'm amazed that people don't want to drive..it's part of the fun of the holiday driving on the left, it's not rocket science nor a dark art...
