Will be traveling on Wednesday 10/02/24 late morning on TransPennine Express and can choose to connect at Newton-le-Willows on a Transport for Wales Train onward to Chester or connect at Manchester Victoria on a Northern Train onward to Chester. Connection time is better with Northern, fare is less expensive with Transport for Wales.. Will be buying two single tickets with a Two Together Rail card.
Aside from negligible time and cost differences, is one train line better than the other? Just wondering.
Or the cheapest way to do the journey is to use any operator from York to Leeds (Northern are usually cheapest) then the Northern train from Leeds to Chester at 43 minutes past each hour (you could also change on to that train at Manchester Victoria or Newton le Willows). Northern Advance fares are released 8 weeks out.
You would need to buy the ticket as York-Leeds and Leeds to Chester. Before railcard reductions that should be £4 + £12.10- so £2.90 + £7.95 each with railcard.
Thank you. Why does York to Chester always default to TransPennine Express as the initial train with a connection at Newton-le Willows or Manchester Victoria on either LNER or Trainline App? Neither site offers an initial Northern Line Train from York to Leeds and then an onward connection to Chester.
Must I look to book the entire journey on Northern Line website or app?
I guess because the systems are designed to provide the fastest connections.
You can book the two tickets on any train company web site, but we know that (unlike some train company sites) the Northern website and app work properly at least in Canada, so we have to assume in the USA as well.
I suppose your original question still stands, if choosing the TPE option. The Northern train will always normally be a modern 2 or 3 car Class 195 as they are called- the go anywhere fleet Northern have. A good train.
The TfW will be either a 3 car or a brace of 2 car Class 197 diesel sets- pretty much the most ,modern trains TfW have.
I wouldn't like to differentiate the two apart. Nor would I really like to determine to change at Victoria or NlW. Victoria is clearly the bigger station with more facilities.
On TransPennine it will be either a single or double Class 185 diesel. Each 185 is 3 cars. If it's a single set then it is likely to be pretty crowded. A 6 car train will have more room. But without checking each service in turn we don't know which. Even if booked as 6 car if there is a train failure on the day it could end up as a 3 car- even worse.
Wow, I see the difference. Can book at about 24.46 GBP with a 11:23-11:53 York-Leeds Northern Line and then a 12:43-3:01 Leeds-Chester Norther Line Train . That is how we will book it soon. Thanks for all your help..
I am next going to be looking at Chester to London on Saturday, 10/5/24 single agin for both of us with a Rail Card to arrive in London between 1:00-2:00 p.m. if you have any suggestions. I believe we will arrive at London Euston Station.
Thanks ain!
You really know your trains!
