This will be our first trip to England without a rental car. We will be taking trains, but now I wonder what the best way is to get to Castle Howard from York. I see several options. What have been your experiences? Thanks.
I have no experience of getting to Castle Howard by public transport, but then again I would drive as I live in Yorkshire. However try having a look at www.grandyorkshire.com - while rather less than impartial it does gives the pros and cons of travelling to and from Castle Howard by bus. The page I looked at was dated 2014 so do double check that the service still runs and what the current costs are!
If all else fails there are regular service buses which include Castle Howard on their routes.
Have a great trip and I hope you enjoy my home county!

We will be in York in September and have booked two day tours with Grand Yorkshire Tours ( http://www.grandyorkshire.com/). They do small group tours (van not bus) at what we think are reasonable prices (35 pounds per person). We have booked a tour to Castle Howard that includes Riveaulx Abbey and the moors. All reviews we have seen are excellent.
It is a good option if you do not want to drive yourself.
Hi Bonnie. Thanks for the information. We had just decided we would rent a car for the day, but I will check into this. Do you know how much time they spend at each site? Thanks!
You can get a taxi to take you there and arrange to pick you up.
If you wish to find out how to get to places by local buses - just go to www.traveline.info
I just typed out your trip & found that bus 181 will get you from York to Castle Howard in an hour. You can even click a map of the route & zoom down to find out where the bus goes from in York.
PS. In Wales, it is best to use this version:>https://www.traveline.cymru
James, that website is a great tip, thanks!
