York or Newcastle Upon Tyne?

We have three nights in late May in England before starting a bike trip out of Kirkcudbright Scotland. Looking for recommendations/comments on whether to spend three nights in York or NewCastle Upon Tyne? Will use public transportation to get to Kirkcudbright via Dumfries; probably train.

We like outdoor activities, exploring city streets, Hop On Hop Off buses to get an overview of a city, a bit of museums and a few castles, meeting locals etc.

Suggestions?

York for ancient history (notably the well-preserved Roman city walls), quaint streets and touristy stuff, plus easy access to Yorkshire beauty spots. Newcastle for industrial history, nightlife and arguably more 'city-like' facilities.

It would be no contest for me - York without question.

Stay in York. For three days, I would also get small group day tour into the North Yorkshire Moors. Its beautiful countryside and not to be missed.

York is a wonderful small city! The Shambles and the market are good for just roaming and shopping (though we always found the main 'real' shopping area nice, too). The Jorvik 'museum' is fun- a Disney-esque 'ride through the history of the Vikings and York's 'founding'. There's the Minster. And DO take at least a short walk along the wall. We also found a local microbrewery that did tours that included samples at the end (hubby indulged, I had soda). There is also a train museum near the station. We always stayed at the hotel attached to the train station- it has a lovely garden with great flowers (it has gone by different names over the years and not sure what it is called now). York is one of my favorite places in the UK.

My husband and I loved our visit to York a couple of years ago. We stayed at Dean Court Hotel (Best Western Premier) which is directly across from the York Minister. Hotel was wonderful and we thoroughly enjoyed the view of the Minister from our window.

Thanks for all the great suggestions! We've chosen York!

Does anyone have suggestions for a hotel or AirBnB? We like pedestrian friendly areas near restaurants but not noisy nightlife. We will use public transportation as we are not planning to rent a car. Appreciate the help!
