York on Weekends?

Hi all - I'm looking to rent a house on Airbnb in York for this summer. I see that a lot of descriptions on there say "no stag or hen parties." This makes me wonder if York is something of a party town on the weekends? Just wondering as we'll have 5 kids with us...

Thanks!

It isn't as bad as Blackpool, less showy than Newcastle.

But I think to a degree you have answered your question... And stags and hens are good - apart from the mayhem - it means people are getting married which is much rarer in this country than before.

Thanks Nigel! Any thoughts on an alternative walled town to spend a couple days? I’ve been to York once before and thought the kids would like the little windy streets and snickleways… but now thinking about a possibly quieter alternative…

"No stag or hen parties" means the owner of that place wants, let's say, less boisterous tenants. It doesn't mean York is infested with boisterous people unencumbered by spouses. It's a big enough city that you and your five kids (non-boisterous no doubt) will find plenty to do without excessive exposure to stags or hens. If you're looking for a place big enough to accommodate all of you, you're looking at a pretty big place, which is why the owner is concerned about groups of adults who might do damage or upset the neighbors.

Your post says you want an Airbnb "for this summer." If you mean for the whole summer, you might have a better trip if you move around a little more. York is great but a whole summer there means missing a lot else in Britain. Or maybe you mean "for a week this summer" or some such, in which case it's a great choice.

Beverley, in East Yorkshire, a few miles north of Hull, might be an alternative walled town. Still easy to get to York, either by direct bus or via Hull on the train- assuming you are using public transit.

We were last in York on a bank holiday weekend in May, and we saw a number of hen party groups walking around—all dressed up in various ways. They did crowd the sidewalks a bit, but I think your kids might find it amusing, rather than disturbing. There were no rowdy parties in the restaurant, at least where we dined.

I've used Airbnbs throughout England and "no stag or hen parties" is a pretty standard house rule.

If a walled town is important then Chester would be the obvious alternative. There’s no guarantee of course that there wouldn’t be other groups out for a good time on any weekend. Whatever you do make sure that your visit doesn’t coincide with a race meeting whether it be York or Chester.

There are always folks out for a good time, as mentioned, but in three weekend visits to York they have never affected me. 2 small b&bs on the west centre and one at the Indigo right in the centre.

As above, it’s a common exclusion in airbnbs. York is a popular hen/stag destination but they’ll be doing their own thing and won’t affect you much. I very much doubt you’ll want to go to any of the same venues.

This. "No stag or hen parties" is pretty standard across all sorts of accommodations across the UK. Kind of a plus and a selling point for a place. York itself never struck me as a party town.
