York National Railway Museum LONG walking detour

Just an FYI that the construction going on near the National Railway Museum in York means pedestrians have to walk much more than normal to get to the entrance. On the way there from our lodging, we didn’t know about this beforehand, and it added about 20 minutes of walking to what would have been a 13 minute walk.

On our way out, to our destination near the Minster, the 17-minute walk would have been closer to 50. Thankfully we remembered they have a cute (yet pricey; £18 for our family) “road train” that was able to take us to the Minster and save our feet (and our kids’ stamina for the day).

The staff we talked to said that they weren’t consulted before the detour went into place, so that’s a bummer.

Thought I’d save someone the foot-aching surprise. The museum was still very worth it.

I've not been to York, yet, but I will be there soon. We will be arriving by train, so our host sent us a map with directions to their BnB. She said the directions are still good.

THere is a footbridge over the River Ouse, that is on the road Bootham Terrace, and right by a large parking lot (Marygate Car Park). Cross the footbridge and there is a short walk to Leeman Road. Turn right and the museum is right there. I can see the bridge on Google Maps. Looks like a pedestrian river crossing is maybe shared with a train crossing.

Looking at the map, if I wanted to get to the museum from the Minster, Walk on Duncombe Minster which goes into Museum street, turn right on Dame Judi Dench walk, walk until you get to the bridge.

I visited in April this year and had some difficulties finding the route. (That is not unusual for me....... Map-challenged, including Apple Map-challenged)

The museum website has a couple pages dedicated to "getting here" in light of the disruptions. What they show looks like what I experienced. Sadly, I had not prepared by looking at their website in depth. Apple Maps was clear, but only in retrospect after I understood the route!

I just confirmed with my BnB the existence of a footbridge over the river connecting to Leeman Road, I hope to God she is right because we arrive York via train and if we can't get to the foot bridge, its a LOOOOONG way around.

Early June I visited the museum and there was already a little detour for getting to the museum. Seems the roadworks are still going on, and seeing the museum’s map ORD traveler provides us you have to walk a bit more. To my opinion very doable with a normal walking pace.

The museum is fantastic and liked it more than York itself. Too much a tourist playground there for me.
